A 5-year-old boy from Merrick reunited with his grandfather Monday after helping him through a medical emergency last week.
Chase Mifsud got to miss school, along with his three siblings, to welcome his grandfather, Anthony Magno, home from Catholic Health’s St. Joseph Hospital following the health scare.
Mifsud and Magno live together, and on Friday, Magno was home alone waiting for Mifsud's return from a playdate when he developed a fever and had trouble breathing. After Mifsud arrived home, Magno FaceTimed his daughter, Roseann, who noticed his speech was slurred.
She asked to speak with Mifsud and urged the scared 5-year-old to focus and become "Dr. Chase" while they called 911.
The young boy stopped crying and grabbed a thermometer and stayed by his grandfather's side, holding his hand, rubbing his back and wiping away his tears as they waited for help to arrive.
Magno was later diagnosed with pneumonia. He said on Monday he felt blessed that Mifsud came home at the right time.
"I'm really proud of him...he means the world to me," Magno said.
St. Joseph Hospital named Mifsud an honorary doctor for the day, giving him a white coat and stethoscope.
Afterwards, Mifsud and Mango walked out of the hospital hand-in-hand.
