Police say 60-year-old Derrick Watson has died from his injuries nearly two weeks after he was violently robbed at a Crown Heights deli on Eastern Parkway on April 22. While it's unclear what the motive was, sources previously told News 12 that Watson and one of his attackers had children with the same woman. News 12 previously reported three attackers followed Watson into the deli on Eastern Parkway around 12:30 a.m. on April 22 and kicked and punched him in the head and body before taking his wallet and cash and running away. Police have arrested 18-year-old Devon Johnson and 47-year-old Devon Johnson in connection to the attack. Sources say the duo are father and son. Both face murder, robbery and manslaughter charges.
EMS rushed Watson to One Brooklyn Health–Brookdale Hospital Medical Center.
The criminal complaint says that Watson's heart stopped for 25 minutes the night of the attack.
He fought for his life for nearly two weeks before being pronounced dead on May 4.
A photo of Watson, as well as candles, sits outside of the deli in tributed to him. Customers like Charles Elder say it's a devastating loss.
"I got goosebumps. It's not right, it's not fair, at the end of the day, it's a loss," said Elder.
Authorities say both Watsons live just steps from the deli where they allegedly carried out the attack.
Sources say the third suspect has not been arrested as of Tuesday evening.
