A controversial proposal to convert a former school building in Bay Shore into a Muslim boarding school may face a significant hurdle.

The Islip Town Zoning Board has ruled against the boarding component of the project.

The United American Muslim Organization purchased the property on Saxton Avenue and is looking to establish a boarding school for 120 boys.

However, the board determined that housing students on site does not comply with the town's current zoning rules.
