Students at Kennedy High School in Bellmore marked two historic milestones with an academic field day celebrating America's 250th anniversary and the school's 60th anniversary.
The event gave students a hands-on opportunity to explore history through a variety of activities. Students participated in panel discussions with veterans, created a chalk timeline of American history and learned about life in earlier generations.
Activities also allowed students to step back in time by exploring how people played sports and baked more than a century ago.
"It’s a great way on a day like this for students to get a traditional education outside the classroom," said social studies teacher Brad Seidman.
Students said the event also helped strengthen connections throughout the school community.
"It’s a good way to make a sense of community and all of the students work together to have such a good day," said senior Katelyn Kuhl.
In addition to learning about history, students gave back to those who served by collecting food, toiletries and clothing to support local veterans in need.
