An abandoned boat and a large buoy that sat on Shinnecock Nation beaches were successfully removed on Friday.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Shinnecock Indian Nation teamed up to remove the 27-foot vessel from Westwoods Beach.
Officials say the boat was first spotted by Shinnecock Nation last year.
The U.S. Coast Guard also helped with the removal of the 1,200-pound buoy that washed up on the Shinnecock Beach more than five years ago.
The EPA says the multi-agency effort will help protect the community and the environment.
“For multiple years and through different agencies, staff and leadership tried to have the boat removed to no avail,” said Shavonne F. Smith, Environmental Director of the Shinnecock Environmental Department. “We greatly appreciate the support and effort of the EPA Region 2 staff to successfully assist us with this tremendous task.”
