In Glen Cove, craftsman Joe Ferrara is turning locally sourced wood into custom furniture, including pieces made from trees that fell right here on Long Island.
Ferrara is the owner of Sound Designs. He says his passion for woodworking grew from a side job into a full-time business. His work ranges from cutting boards to 15-foot tables, with projects reaching customers from the Hamptons to Kentucky.
After seeing trees come down across Long Island following Hurricane Sandy, Ferrara saw an opportunity. "I remember thinking there has to be something to do with this material," he said.
Today, those fallen trees are cut, dried, and turned into custom pieces built specifically for each customer. "It's not mass produced and it's made just for you," Ferrara said.
Ferrara says the work is physically demanding, but the result is worth it, creating pieces designed to last for generations.
