Suffolk police are seeking the public’s help to locate the person who broke into a storage facility over the summer.
According to Sixth Precinct Crime Section officers, the individual used a metal object to bend locks and gain access to approximately 50 units.
The alleged theft happened between 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 and 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 23 at Public Storage in Mount Sinai.
Police tell News 12 assorted property was stolen from inside the business located at 508 Route 25A.
News 12 spoke with people Thursday at the storage unit, who either had their units broken into or attempted.
"My mom's flute, a family flute was just missing," says Evelyn Colli, of Port Jefferson. "It's something that's not as easy to replace."
Colli, speaking to News 12 by phone, says she was never notified about the break in, and she only found out when it happened through News 12.
"I found out through you guys today when the break-in happened. They didn't tell me that," says Colli.
East Patchogue resident Cheryl Schaeffer says her unit was broken into with a crowbar, but nothing was taken.
"They crowbarred open the door," says Schaeffer. "They were clearly looking for jewelry or money. When I did come in, the police were here and they were working with the management team - they were going through the videos."
News 12 reached out to Public Storage through a corporate email, and spoke on the phone with a manager. The manager said he wasn't authorized to speak with News 12.
