Sachem Central School District officials are apologizing to the William Floyd school community after Sachem North students allegedly displayed offensive signs during Friday night’s football game.

The signs reportedly contained crude and inappropriate statements involving the girlfriends of William Floyd football players.

The game was held at Sachem North High School. William Floyd’s football game attendance procedures include a code of conduct requiring spectators to behave appropriately. The district’s policy states that anyone who violates the code may be removed from the game and banned from attending future games.

In a statement sent to the Sachem community Tuesday, Superintendent Patti Trombetta said the district takes the concerns about the signs “very seriously.”

“The messages shown do not align with the respect and sportsmanship we expect from our student body, and this behavior will not be tolerated,” Trombetta said.

She said the district has a responsibility to support students while also holding them accountable and helping them understand the impact of their choices.

“As a Sachem community, we sincerely apologize to the William Floyd community for any hurt caused,” Trombetta said.

Trombetta added that the district will continue reinforcing the importance of sportsmanship, respect and responsibility.
